Jen Flanz and Jocelyn Conn both work at the The Daily Show, Jen as Executive Producer and Co-Showrunner, and Jocelyn as Senior Coordinating Producer. At Uenoland they will talk about producing a daily TV show.

Uenoland: You have both been making The Daily Show for a very long time, Jen for over 20 years. How do you keep it from becoming a routine?

Jen Flanz & Jocelyn Conn: By nature of the show everyday is different. We’re reacting to what’s happening in the news cycle, which changes everyday. The stories are different which makes the content different. Trying to make it not routine also paves way for creativity. It forces you find different ways to cover the news or say what we want to say.

What’s the most fun thing you get to do as producers of The Daily Show?

At the end of everyday we get to see the fruits of our labor! All the little details and decisions that are made during the day culminate in front of a live audience and then on air.

Jen, do you remember why you hired Jocelyn?

I hired her as an intern because not only was she interested in television, she was a barista, which tipped me off that she had a good work ethic. We immediately clicked.

You just started a dating app called Jinx. Why “Jinx?”

Jinx sets out to combat some of the stigmas that exist in the current dating apps. Basically we’re both experts at dating and set out to fix swipe fatigue. It’s called Jinx because when you match you’ve both swiped “yes” and this creating a jinx.

When did you last have a moment of zen?

The beach in Puerto Rico with a piña colada last week!

Any other Uenoland speakers you’re looking forward to seeing?

David Rees! He’s a friend. Can’t wait to sit in the back and heckle him.

What time is it and where are you in the world? What do you see when you look up from the screen?

3:13pm on a holiday weekend in traffic! Screen may be better …

Jen Flanz and/or Jocelyn Conn wrote us back while sitting in traffic on Friday, April 19th, 2019.
